When they are at home almost all Chinese people take off their shoes and wear slippers. This is meant to keep the floor clean. For Chinese people a clean floor is very important.
In fact in many cultures Asian, African, Arabs, it is a custom to take off your shoes when you go home. I am curious to know the origin of this custom. I think it is a way to delimit the public and the private sphere. I have read that is due to home being built off the ground: "According to Asian Lifestyle Design, traditional Asian homes were built about two feet off the ground. It was common practice for people to remove their shoes before stepping up into the home. This practice was carried into modern times."
