Cleanliness in China

Cleanliness is very important for Chinese people.
Cleanliness means different preconceived ideas. Here are a few:

  • Cleanliness= good smell
Cleanliness goes with perfume and smell.
All paper handkerchief in China are perfumed.
I think that it is due to the fact that Chinese people use paper handkerchief not only to sneeze but also as paper toilet. It is therefore more clean to have a perfumed handkerchief.

  • Cleanliness= clean floor
Floor is the most important element to communicate on cleanliness for Chinese people. Mac Donald and KFC understand this well. In Chinese people mind, a clean floor means clean kitchen and even clean, healthy food!

  • Cleanliness= white
Cleanliness color is white.
For instance in China bakeries are white like hospitals!

  • Cleanliness= modern materials
Chinese people associate modern material to cleanliness.
For instance, they would rather have a plexiglass wall than painting.

  • Cleanliness= clean shoes
Having clean shoes is important in China in order to show your social rank, that you have money. Maybe this is due to the fact that roads are too dirty to keep clean shoes without using a car? Anyway you can polish your shoes everywhere in China.
